cleaning of oil burners

Recently i recieved an oil shipment from the local oil distributor. and after a week of running my boiler the unit craps out due accumulation of soot. i wasted a cold saturday night with the shop vac cleaning this out.

I assumed it was all the crap at the bottom of my tank that went to the burner. Is there any way i can get some cleaning fluid to pour into my tank to avoid this mishap and where to get it.

    .

Alex the soot will kill your shop-vac --your boiler did not soot up from the oil delivery --it was very close to being plugged and dirty before your delivery ,you need to get the boiler cleaned, chimney cleaned and inspected the oil tank should be checked for sludge, water accumulation -the burner serviced --and set-up with combustion instruments -draft checked adjusted -- a regular annual servicing of the equpment is necessary for reliable & efficient operations--to make sure these events don't happen again --3 simple steps will help #1 service equipment annualy #2when you are getting an oil delivery --turn off the equipment turn it back on a 1/2 hour later #3keep your oil tank full in the summer months(this mainly applies to outdoor tanks -condensation will build up in the tank --more so the lower it is ---
  • If your boiler was being \"serviced\" regularly

and it plugged up with soot, you need to switch oil companies. A modern flame-retention burner will not produce smoke or soot when properly installed and adjusted. This means setting it up using a digital combustion analyzer. Bet your oil company tech takes about 30-45 minutes for the "annual service", right? If so, he's not doing anything at all.

    Wise words, Frank

... I have seen it myself firsthand when I helped a real oil pro clean the "professionally serviced" boiler for the apartment I was renting at the time. He was by himself, saw the system for 10 seconds, shook his head, and then said he'd need to call backup, it was too much for him alone. I volunteered to help instead, which he accepted.

Among other things, we removed over an inch of soot in the flue piping that ran 9' horizontally to the chimney. Two hours later, we were done and the boiler was running like a top. Better yet, the air shutter on the burner was no longer jammed open as far as it would go, etc. Plus, I learned a thing or two about cleaning and setting up oil boilers.

You too have shown here several times what a difference a professional who cares makes when it comes to "saving" oil systems from the state you find them in. Keep up the good work.

Will adding something to your gas tank fix a carburetor? Anything coming from your tank will fill the filter, not cause soot. Get the unit inspected by a company that knows combustion analysis, not fuel delivery.

    2 hour cleaning

A tech. who cleans in less time must be worth more than I am. But lets check the call back rate. Trained service men and women can actually save you in the end.

Soot does not come from the tank Proper maintenance will always keep the soot away. Soot is wasted money the soot comes from poor combustion. clean it set it up and save.
