steam boiler replacement cost?

It is almost impossiable to do that without looking over the existing system to see what kind of returns you have, whether you need a condesate pump, piping configurations may have to be changed etc. I just figured a large 1870's system replacement. It took eight hrs to measure everything, reserch the old rads for sizing to figure what we would need for a boiler and then price it out. That job is figured for more than eighty hrs so pretty spendy, and even then, costs in differant parts of the country can be very differant. Get three bids, you will usually be able to get a good idea of who is right. If one is real high or real low, then that is the one that usually gets thrown out. Course the guy that is high just might be the guy who knows what he is doing. Steam is a differant animal, not very forgiving if you screw it up. Ask lots of questions and see if they know what they are talking about

    steam boiler replacement cost?

Just found out today that my 24 year old boiler is leaking. Of course, i've only had the house for a year! Have had one estimate and will get another. Can someone tell me a range for a reasonable estimate to replace it? The 2 floors of living space in my house total 1800 sf. Also, if i can convert from steam boiler to hot water, should i? thank you!

I'm no professional at all. However, can't you just replace the boiler section that leaks, as opposed to buying new boiler? I think so.

    May be multiple sections leaking.

    If it's 24 years old...

you don't want to mess around with replacing sections. What happens when another section goes next year? Efficiency ratings may be better on a new boiler as well.
The pros on the Wall generally don't like to talk pricing for obvious reasons. Have you tried the Find a Professional link to find a good contractor in your area?

A two-pipe steam system can sometimes be converted to hot water, however, if you've got a one-pipe system forget it. I would not suggest converting a steam system to hot water. Sounds like you just need a pro who knows steam!

    cost?

I would keep the steam...great source of heat if zoned right. You don't size steam on sgft of area..you have to size the radiators and pipe. Based on that your cost can very. Make sure the person replacing knows steam (oversizing boiler can be as bad as undersizing). I would avoid converting to water if possible.
