How are you supposed to follow up on this stuff?

I stopped in yesterday to install an automatic water feeder in a person's home, expected it to be pretty straightforward. . . found that they had a Saf-guard lwco-feeder combo, which can be a real pain in the **** on a good day, installed with a bird's nest of wires inside and around the cut-off. Probing further, I found that the entire safety circuit was a complete mess, with 4 wire thermostat wire cut, tied into, all over the place, and as I probed even further, discovered that the intermittent gas valve had been nig-rigged to run all the time, basically as a standing pilot valve. The LWCO works about half the time, and of course the feeder won't work because the cutoff doesn't. . . so the 64,000 question is - How the HELL am I the bad guy? The customer thinks I'm a crook because I told her the price to rewire the boiler correctly and replace the components, and that I'm making up the problem. I told her it's only a matter of time before the gas valve causes an explosion.

Why do people think we're making this stuff up?

at least he's listed in "Find A Professional" Only 9.4 miles from my house. I'm so lucky. I'm not sure how he finds anyone in Queens who isn't Jewish, Black, Latino, South Asian, Chinese or who doesn't talk like an immigrant to work for, so I guess as long as the money is green... ;-)

I'm posting anonymously, as I really want no part of this nonsense. This whole thread confuses me.

A gentleman writes a post seeking help, with a family's safety his top priority. Suddenly, the entire board has no interest in helping them, as the poster used an incompletely worded, formerly common slang.

The best part comes, though, when someone threatens to throw bricks at the original poster's house. You may not agree with the poster's terminology, but that makes him different. That's his diversity. But that's no problem, you can solve his problems with violence. Now's who's doing the hating? No hate was intend by his post. Hate was intended by your post.

Unfortunately I do not have much familiarity with control systems, or I would be helping right now. I can see past his words, and help a fellow man. Meanwhile, a family is left in what could be a dangerous situation. I truly hope nothing happens to them, I really do. You would all be in some way responsible...

As for diversity - now that's something. This is a free country, and everyone is entitled to an opinion. But to espouse diversity while using it merely as a cloak for one's hatred - that's quite sad.

They taught me what they knew, without any thought or expectation of thanks.

Huh? Bigotry as diversity?

Although this has got to be the first time anyone used such a blatantly offensive racial slur on The Wall (at least any I've read), we all know we've heard it before. No matter what race, religion, ethnic background you may be, somebody out there doesn't like you because you're not like them. Or enough like them. Our government can't legislate bigotry out of society. (Doesn't seem like to me it can legislate much of anything right, actually) The only way bigotry and racism can ever start to lose the useless footing it holds now is if those of us that hear it and see it start saying "Enough!" The ladies and gentlemen from the academic world speak of such things as if it were some sort of sociolgical oddity to be studied from a desk, with a solution available if only they could study it more in depth. Hogwash. The solution can only come when we each stand up when it's our turn. And say "Enough."

Words have meaning. If we combine the offensive slang with the e-mail address and do just the tiniest bit of sleuthing (Internet is a wonderful thing) what conclusion are we to come to?

Now the OP may just use that e-mail addy because he saw it mentioned on a Danzig website and it looked cool. In that case he gets to plead ignorance. Or......

He knows EXACTLY what the group is and he is a member of the NYC chapter. In that case he must plead White Supremacist.

The OP has not returned to edit his post or offer an explanation for the e-mail addy. When I hire people with little or no experience, I tell them that there are two kinds of screw-ups they will make in their lives. One is made from ignorance. Ignorance, I tell them is OUR problem. We need to teach the newbie thus enabling them to move forward and succeed. After that, if the same mistake is made, that is NEGLIGENCE. AND NEGLIGENCE IS THEIR PROBLEM.

In any event, he probably just ruined ANY chance he had of getting much work from the FAP spot and his reputation here is now suspect. No-one was threatening to throw bricks at his house as has been pointed out. A little sleuthing on your part would have revealed what that was all about. But the remarks in your post were made from a position of ignorance and that is OUR problem. We that visit this site regularly are more than willing to educate you regarding the term "bricks".

I have been coming to this site for MANY years and I have NEVER seen anyone post anything in such poor taste or down-right racism.

I believe that the ONLY reason Dan has not deleeted the thread is because he wants the THOUSANDS of folks that come to this site to see thr TRUE caliber of the majority of professionals that contribute to this site. While we may be divided along political lines and often fight like school children, it is wrong to assume that we will not unite when someone posts an idiotic remark such as the OP did.

He came here asking for help and HE alienated himself with that STUPID remark. He did it, not us. So in essence, he hijacked his own thread, made his company look bad and made himself look like a fool at best.

He has made no attempt to reconcile or explain to date. Silence often speaks louder than words.

BTW, Hitler was a diverse fellow, no? Stalin? Amin? How about Charlie Manson? All diverse fellows. That is a diversity that I would not celebrate, rather I would destroy it. But that is beyond the power of any man.

I do vividly remember those times - and I remember the some same vitriol this year, just no so broadlybroadcast or so often supported by local & state government. I grew up here in the deep-enough South, of a family that is Southern (at least on one side). Thankfully that family would not tolerate the N word & all the rubbish that goes with it. I love the place (despite no knowledgeable steam pros). My love doesn't blind me to the viciousness of racism, here or across the country.
