Time for purge ?

Member Posts: 2
Greetings, just finished installing my new boiler , by the book *Pumping Away*.
Piped exactly like the book page 48, my question is how long when doing the initial purge of air ( pipes/baseboard about 80 feet for example, all 3/4" )does it take to push all the air out with the feed water ?
It seems like 20 minutes is not enough, still got air, how do you tell that all the air is gozo? Just by sound ?
Also, what is happening when there is more water than air coming out of the new Taco air vent on top of the air scoop? I have pushed the needle down in the valve a number of times to try to clean , no avail .
Pressure is good, 15lb cold , about 22 hot 180*.
Thanks !!

As an educated guess
it should take only a handful of minutes to purge 80 feet of baseboard . That's the average amount for a 1st floor Levitt style home , which we work in frequently . To purge it you really need to increase the pressure . I keep it around 20-25 psi. , then knock it down below 20 when done and the boiler hot .
The air vent is kaput . You should only get a little spritz after a sudden closing from the float in the can . We've been having troubles with Taco air vents also .0 -
phew
Now you mention trouble with air vent's..All this time I was thinking I was screwing something up...I've had 4 bad one's in the last month. Glad to know I'm not alone.

Two or three years back I sent half a dozen autovents back to Taco so they could figure out what was wrong. Taco told me that they worked normally. The local rep. would not take my remaining inventory back. I wound up throwing my inventory in the trash as I figured A: If leaking was normal I might do better with another brand, and B: It was cheaper to throw them away now than to go back replace them and then throw them away.0 -
one thing I have ...
done is to go with the air vent shut offs on many of my installs. This makes swap out a piece of cake.... also I have also found that when doing the initial purge I now leave the cap closed untill I am done the purging process. less chance of junk getting caught there.....kpc
