some one slap this guy upside the head for me...

So over the summer a contractor sends me to look at moving a radiator in a bathroom they're doing over. There's a hot water convector maybe 2 ft long and he wants to replace it with a 2 ft piece of baseboard.
I tell him to leave the radiator or to replace it with a new one because the baseboard won't give off enough heat and besides the baseboard will always get air and maybe not work and either way YOU'LL BE COLD.

"No, that's what my wife wants."

Okay, so I tell the contractor the story and he says just do what he wants. Ha, ha. Ok don't call me when he's cold.

Now we fast forward to today and "my radiator won't get hot"
    NO KIDDING! I told you...

"I don't want to hear it.."

So when I get over there later I'll say it a little louder lol.

You call me up, ask my advice, do what you want anyway and now you're crying. Today will be the first and last free service call on this one.

    Just venting....

    I'd call him back

and give him the price to fix it...by installing a convector or panel radiator. If he resists, I'd tell him that I have nothing else in my bag of tricks.

    Alway's a tough call

When someone directs me to install something that more than likely isn't going to be satisfactory for the long haul you need to get a sign off.

That will do the trick. When someone is asked to put their signature on a document that holds me not liable for non-performance that tends to be the end of the foolishness. Of course they find some one else who is willing to roll the dice, but that's OK. They know how to get a hold of me down the road.

    Be careful

The law is a funny thing. I know an hvac contractor who had a similar circumstance. Homeowner said he wanted it this way. It won't work said the contractor. I want what I want, said the Homeowner. He got the Homeowner to sign a statement saying the contractor was not responsible if it didnt work. Later it didnt work and the HO sued. The courts sided with the HO and said the contractor was responsible for making it work or they shouldnt of done the job. Common sense and common courtesy died a long time ago it seems. WW

    Wayco

I'd like to learn about the court case. Can you ask the contractor to contact me? It sounds like something that other contractors would be interested to learn. Thanks.

    I saw him last nite

I told him if he keeps having trouble I'm not coming back all winter. He knows he's busted on the radiator thing since the GC is a witness and his relative so there won't be any lawsuits. We coulda had a nice panel radiator in there or a towel warmer for a few hundred bucks more back then but he didn't want to hear it.

The best part was when I made a remark about let me try this or that and see if I can get it hot and he says "Whatever you think, you're the expert"

I stopped and turned around and said "Oh...NOW I'm the expert...three months ago you were the expert." He didn't think that was funny, oh well ;-)
