Soot in my flue pipe

You didn't mention if it's oil or gas...yes, gas boiler can make soot!!! Any boiler that burns a fossil fuel with generate some level of soot at various times. Changing weather conditions effect draft, start-up efficiency, etc. Have the tech do a combustion test BEFORE he cleans the boiler. We do this on every "new" boiler we see for the first time. It will tell you if anything is wrong or out of adjustment before he does his thing with it. It could be a one time incident that cause the soot or it could be an adjustment issue. A good tech can check this out for you. Above all, don't be afraid to ask, a god tech will listen and explain things. If he's reluctant or seems upset that you're asking these questions, maybe you've hired the wrong guy.

I have noticed a small sprinkling of black ashes with white flecks in the opening of my flue damper. I'm scheduled for an annual tuneup in a couple of weeks, and I want to ask the right questions. This is my first year with this new boiler so Im especially sensitive to any issues with combustion and condensation in the new boiler setup. Are these ashes normal buildup over the course of a year, or are they a hint of combustion problems that I need to address? Thanks guys.0 -

Al, how long does it take to get to god tech status?
I've met some who thought they were there but I didn't think so.0
