hi i'm just wondering why it's so important to calculate the pressure drop for each zone.

is it to make sure you choose the right size pump for the job

and what is a pressure drop?

is it the calculation of pipe size and length and bends
in other words pump head right?

thanks

    That's a loaded question

    that begs to be answered.
    1. All to oftened today the supply warehouse counter person selects the circulator for you. Because you know he is smarter than the average guy in the field. 2. Why buy a tiny circ. when for a little more green you can get the M.O.A.P translation ( mother of all pumps). 3. This pump will C.Y.A. No translation available ( there could be a kid or two on this site. 4. Yes you do want to find the biggest H2O loss and find the circulator to meet that loss and total GPM needed to supply your connected loads. 5. Yes it is the friction created by the water going through the obstacle course that we sometimes call a piping job.

    LOL,

I'll simply add that Dans Radiant Primer as well as Siggys Modern Hydronic Heating go into some detail on the subject (particularly the latter).

The right circulator for the job will ensure that the zones heat when they ought to, that they will do so evenly and efficiently (i.e. a proper ΔT), without flow noises. Chances are that such a circulator will also consume a minimum of energy to run and hence won't heat the water electrically.
