    Copper steam headers

Not a good idea! Threaded black iron& drop header is the only way to go.

    Copper Headers for Steam

I don't know why anyone would even consider using copper for anything in a steam system, and particularly for headers! Expansion factor and resistance to the slightly acidic content of condensate are the primary reasons to stay away from this material. Think also about soldered joints and their strength when heated to half the melting point of the solder used. Steam is an "old fashioned" medium, use old fashioned materials (black iron, cast fittings, and cast iron)unless of course you can afford an all stainless steel piping system. PS: DON'T forget the insulation!!

    why

Why is a drop header the "only way to go"? I never use one and I've never had a problem. If you look in the instructions it doesn't say you have to use one.

    drop headers

I agree its not the only way to go and is rarely used in everyday practice. we do use them for larger residential boilers when clearance is a problem, or standard fittings and nipples don't match the spread of the riser tappings. The drop header gives you greater flexibility in alinging piping and best of all, drier steam.
