AFUE

I have an American Standard Gas Boiler installed in 1970. On the Metal plate in front it says: Input- 270000 and Output-216000. Does that mean the AFUE is 80%? The contractor who gave me an estimate on a new boiler said the existing boiler was probably about 60% efficient and I have heard that said as a general rule of all old boilers. How do I find out the true efficiency of this boiler? Thanks.

No your AFUE wouldn'd be 80 %. The number on your burns 270,000 btus to get 216,000 of ouput at 180 degrees. Now have that contractor perform a combustion analysis (which you should expect to be charged for because it does take time) and find out what the combustion effy is and start from there. If the effy is 80% or better then our boiler is still in pretty good shape and you can start looking at other more cost effective measures to save a few bucks on your fuel bill such as insulating your pipes, outdoor reset, zoning.

    Good Luck

No, it doesn't mean that. It has a peak output of 80%, not an average seasonal efficiency of 80%. At the same time, it is probably better than 60%, some contractors give you a lowball figure because they want you to buy a new boiler.

    If...

... that boiler has a net output of 216,000 BTU/hr with a fuel input of 270,000 BTU/hr, then that's 80% boiler eff. That's how proper boiler eff is calculated.
