steam thermostat

Look for battery operated with capability of adjusting cycle rates. Most are set up for forced air with lots of cycles. The new Honeywell Focus Pro or Vision Pro will run off batteries and you can lengthen the cycles for more efficient operation on steam.

There are so many thermostats on yhe market I would like to know from the pro's what stat they would install on a single zone- one pipe gas steam system in a two story house. My boiler is slighty oversized at 404sq ft output to supply 275 sq ft of load. Are digitals good or do I need more ajustibility. Thanks JIM

Any regular two-wire thermostat that works with your equipment at the boiler.

I just came from a customer yesterday that changed his thermostat (mercury t87f) to a new Digital Round (barf) on his gas/steam system.

Being a "power stealing" thermostat, the DRound would power down when the auxiliary hot water zone's relay's XX terminals would fire the boiler.

    Have y'all witnessed this?

    Digital

Working for an oil company I have been on a few calls where the digital stat had a dead battery. Paying an hour swervice call for a few dollars in batteries didin't save much in the end. My steam system in my home has a T87 Round. With the issues on mercury I can see digital becoming the in thing but on a traditional plain system a plain thermostat is fine.

    steam stat

I'm a HO and I use the Honeywell RTH400D Programmable Thermostat its at Lowes or Home depot. You can set it up for three cycles per hour for steam antisapator and it runs off batteries. W to gas valve R to 24v transformer if you have two wires on old one. If you have 4 wires you don't need the other two that were used to power the clock on the old thermostat because now you will have batteries. Enjoy your day
