Insurance?

A relitive of mine just had his homeowners canceled because, get this, he has "Galvanized Pipe"

When pushed for the reason that they wont insure houses with galvinized piping they said "it corrodes from the inside out".

He found another company, but what does this mean for the future?

    Well,

Galvanized water pipes are leaks waiting to happen.

Where water is neutral, copper, brass and plastics have been known to last indefinitely.

Thanks goodness they didn't have a UST! The insurance "Police" would have removed an arm and leg, probably the first born child as well.

    Ken,

    Ken, whats UST?

You and I both know there are houses out there 80+ years old with galvinized still going strong. We have also seen and or read about failures of copper, pex, pb, cpvc etc.

If insurance copmanys are going "ban" galvanized by refusing to insure houses with it, it may mean lots of plumber work but will they start banning other piping materials. Where does this lead? Higher rates of course, but it just seems to me this is another case of the insurance industry running amuck.

    just my pessimistic out look...

    Tom...

....I believe UST means "Underground Storage Tank," as in, a buried oil tank.

I agree with you - where will it end? Seems like insurance is one of the biggest rackets going these days, the oil (big oil, not home heating oil) business notwithstanding!

    Ahhhhh....

That makes sence. Oil's been rare for home heat around here almost as long as galvanized stopped being the water pipe of choice! I'd hate to think what it costs to insure one of them.

    Thanks
