condensing oil burner, or a system2000
even a seald combustion slant-fin oil fired intrepid would do much better

but if you are switching to gas, the ultra is the most bang for the buck so far

    Mr. Gas-Man came today

Natural Gas company came today and installed the gas meter on the side of my shop. I get to play with some of the cool stuff I've only heard about here on the Wall. Going to put in a Weil Ultra 230 condenser next week. Removing a 20 year old Burnham V-18. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with the old Burnham, she has served the building well, but the $1,000 per month heating bills were a little hard to take. Good-bye oil, hello gas. Of course, since natural gas is being TRUCKED in from Anchorage (360 miles south), I think I'll leave my oil tank in the ground until the gas line comes through from Prudhoe BAy! Just to be safe ya know!
Will let you know how it goes,
    Regards,
    Rocky

    Interesting....

So what were the respective prices for the fuel choices that made you switch? I wonder simply because in Boston the price of oil to gas is still quite competitive on a $/BTU basis. Also, is the shop well-insulated? Best of luck with the Ultra, it's a great boiler by all the accounts I have read.

    gas price update....

that I received this AM from the area utility company shows an expected rate for Industrial/Commercial gas to be $10.80 /dkthm compared to $4.87 /dkthrm in Dec. '01. The best you can do is make use of every way possible to cut heatloss and puchase the most efficient equipment money can buy. Best Regards.

    Why not

leave the V-18 in place for backup, and do a larger primary-secondary loop which either boiler can feed? That way if something goes wrong on the gas side, you can change back over to Old Reliable.
