    just curious

If you don't know how to size steam systems, how do you make systems that control them?

It took some time to develop the steam system control. Actually it was an outcome of the air conditioning development when we dicided to use time control as a means rather than temperature as with hydronic systems. Most of the systems we control are in place and do not require retrofit of boilers and radiators to control. But we see systems with old boilers that may well be advantageous to chageif the analysis and cost benefit present themselves. Few folks in my experience who are in the heating business know how to do this much to my surprise. So I am prompted to inquire among the professionals to find from their eperience which software is best for sizing. I was taight in the US Army in the 1960's that there are no stupid questions. I am sorry you disagree. Please oblige me with you wisdom and send me an answer.

    steam boielr sizing software

I'm not sure that I've ever seen any software for sizing steam boilers...it comes down to doing the leg work and measuring the radiators and considering the heat loss calculations and then using the selected manufacturer's sizing charts.....that's the way we do it.

use the same calculator - but on a per room basis...

to size the radiation to the per room heat loss - then size the boiler to the radiation – that you easily get from the radiator’s catalog

ps history shows that if you want to heat the whole building or setback the whole building at the same time - then a properly installed and balanced steam system is untouchable for economy - and doesn’t need fancy electronics - what it does need is to make sure the vents are maintained and that the cut-in/cut-out steam pressure device is working accurately – and only there, is were I would consider something fancy, – that measures inches of pressures accurately and can prevent short cycling, as for load prediction and early rise and such, most of the new electronic thermostats already do that,
tekmar, Honeywell, white-Rogers, Fenwall, rite-temp – to name a few

but if you want zones, zones, zone – forget about steam, use hydronics

    this is my mantra:
hydronics rocks! – that’s why the creator covered 4/5ths of this planet with water and powers it with a nuke – takes care of all our heating AND COOLING needs – if only, we
weren’t so stupid, and actually utilized the gift given to us….

Oceans, sun, clouds, rain – that’s the creators steam system for the large area needs – the massive heating/cooling loads, – as for local zones – we have – mountain, lake, wind, and radiation effects, as well as underground geothermal effects, and you’d think, that after thousands of years of recorded human history we would have observed and learned something for our big daddy…

Yesterday was fathers day, did you buy the creator a present by giving charity? Not to late…

New programables are neat alright. But the Exqheat cycle time adjustment still beats them out for best anticipation. I have better control over max and min fire cycle times and breaks between cycles.

I've seen some pretty good sizing tables in the Burnham heatinghelper book, I also ran across somes table made by Weil McLain. I usually make a spreadsheet and figure my systems that way. It's the closest thing I've found to a program! I'll watch the string since I would like to see what might be available. Good luck!

    Ironical

Here we are in the beginning of an energy crisis with oil at 60.00 a barrel and folks are changinf boilers when ever they can get the job. It would seem to me you could pick up a steam sizing software package at the local Home depot or hardware store. You'd think.....

or at least the Dpt Of Energy should have one...

on their web site that would step a lay person through all the steps nessessary - to calc heating or cooling loads correctly for different heat/coolling systems - but then, that are not really there for YOU, it's one of the three great lies

#1)we are from the government - we are here to help you
#2)the check is in the mail
#3)don't worry, i wont ...in you'r... (off color)

Yeh, that makes sense. My connctions with the Department of energy are: 1. That is not my area. 2. I do not know who is working on that now. 3. We have all the answers, and if we don't we will think of it soon. Thanks for calling. Oh 4. We get a hundred calls a day from nut who think they have the answer. I think they are running a quiz show. We just haven't fiqured that out yet. Now the challenge is to think of the majic question.
