Weil McLain CGA 5
in my sons home. Power venter instead of a vent damper. It runs great I have it set up for two zones of radiant and three hydro air and a indirect heater for the garage. It also runs an indirect DHW Weil Mclain 80 gallon.
I run it at a maximum of 150 degreees and with all the controls I have added along with indoor/outdoor control for the radiant zones it works great. Money was no issue and the only requirement my son had was it had to be a cast iron boiler. It is amazing what you can do with the right controls. With a few additions on the combustion side I have it running at 86.5% combustion eff.. Water treatment also made a big difference I have found as it was set up pressurized and then the feed water was shut off and it has held pressure for two years. It is piped primary/ secondary with circulators. (I do not like zone valves).
I keep it tuned up for maximum efficiency and with a house connected natural gas generator do not have to worry about power failures.
The CO2 is 9.5%, O2 4.8%, Flue temp is 300 degrees stack temp is 200 degrees, draft is -.02 with a flue restricter, the CO has been between 35 PPM to 50 PPM

Replacement system with Weil McLain CGA 5
Replacing 30 year old hydronics boiler with model listed above. Replacing a Hydro Therm boiler feeding 2 zones of baseboard. Any inout on quality of this boiler would be appreciated.

The W/M CGa model
is a fine atmospheric, ~84% AFUE boiler, but with today's scary energy costs, I'd seriously consider a condensing, 92+% boiler. The W/M "Ultra" would be among my first alternates, as would a HTP Munchkin.

ULTRA BOILER
GO WITH THE WEIL ULTRA. HIGH LIMIT IS 190 DEG, HIGHEST IN THE BUSINESS. WILL DIAL DOWN TO 20% OF CAPACITY, COMES WITH OUTDOOR RESET AND PLUG AND PALY. BE SURE TO DO PRIMARY SECONDARY PIPING. YOU'LL GET RAVE REVIEWS.

I agree with Ken, the CGA series is a reliable and well built unit if you can't afford the outlay into higher efficiency systems. Be aware by the time you get all the controls, accessories to make the CGA work properly you may be approaching the cost of a Munchkin or Ultra but the CGA will give you many years of good performance. - mr ed0
