Speakers and Teachers

Mike,

I do not use a microphone except when announcing a speaker. I hate the restriction of standing still.... and anyone who knows me will attest to the fact I can speak to a hall of 100 and be heard easily by all!!!

In the past when I did use a michrophone it was for taping a TV show, we used portable wireless models... a MUST!

(heed the previous warning about the bathroom and TALKING TO PEOPLE DURING BREAK!!!!!

    Microphone Systems

Do any of you use a microphone system that works thru your lap top? I will be on the road doing classes this summer as well as here at HTP, I am looking for a system that I transport, as well as set up here. Any thoughts? Anyone have any good products to reccomend?

    Thanks,

    I didn't have any

luck with that. They either were not loud enough or sounded too tinnie. My previous laptop had a Bose system on board, the new one has Harmon/Kardon, but I still needed a set of externals for effects. I ened up buying these after borrowing/trying several:

Now, I depend on the facility, but many don't have portables, just podium mikes, so I bought this:

Ended up buying a few RCA adapters along the way, but now I think we got it. Hope this helps, probably just confused you more, LOL.

Although I usually don't need one...

...as I am said to have a big enough mouth as it is :), in larger halls I have used wireless Microphone Systems. In many cases, those are provided by the Hotel you're giving the seminars at. Or other local rental places have them available. The wireless systems I found to work best. Can't get used to holding a Microphone in my hands all day. I like waving those around :)

Was good chatting with you yesterday, Chuck!!

I also depend on the function facility because of the difficulties of going through the computer system. But as Dan says....make sure you shut that cordless microphone off before you head into the Men's Room at breaktime!

    For HTP

you can get some good stuff at Radio Shack. They have a pretty inexpesive wireless system, but you'll also need some speakers and an amplifier. When traveling, I always put that responsibility on the meeting facility. Every system is different and if you try to plug into the house system with your own equipment there's an excellent chance it won't work.

BTW, always carry spare 9-volt batteries for their wireless mike. They often don't have a spare on hand.

    swing joints

At one time 3 fitting swing joints off of mains for steam and hot water mains were given a name. What was that name and what is the history behind the name?

    Loud Speakers...

    Chuck,

Unless there is a particular need to have audio come out of the laptop, i.e. your presentation has an audio component, I would stick to a standard portable PA system. Dan's suggestion of Radio Shack is good, as much as I dislike them, they do have presence all over this vast land. You might also try a music instrument store as they would carry small systems like the street musicians use. A couple of names from my previous years are Fender, Nady, Pevy and Yamaha.

You could also get a decent set of small computer speakers (powered by batteries and/or charger) and a decent mike (wired or wireless) and use the laptop's audio amp and mixer. You could also get a wireless presenter's mouse so you can control the mixer and your presentation without hovering over the laptop. Dan does this with his new PowerPoint presentations...

See you at WetStock! Also, if you have a chance can you contact me off-line about a project I'm working on...

    Chuck--

I get a catalog every so often from a place called "Trainer's Warehouse." See if they come up on Google. They have a portable PA system that's fairly compact and pretty powerful. I'll look through my disaster area of an office and see if I can find the catalog. They have lots of cool training tools. (Don't call them toys--then management won't buy them for you!).
