Silly question but I need to know.

We are getting ready to insulate our basement (new construction) and are want to hang the plywood for the elctrical and plumbing. Electricians usually prefer the plywood be painted grey but what color works best for the boiler and all of the plumbing? White or Black?

white shows all the fingerprints and smudges

and black is to dark in my opinion, I kind of like the battleship grey myself or just unpainted is fine

    We stain...

our control boards a dark oak color. It's just dark enough
to hide all the smudges and flux spatter.

    Wrap it

with a sheet of enamaled aluminum from a sign shop supplier. Looks nice, cleans easily, dozens of colors available. I have also used plain old galvinzed available form any HVAC supplier.

Also have a few jobs with 1/2" melamine coated board, pictured below, available at the box stores. Not much more $$ than plywood and no painting is needed! You need to be real careful when soldering near it. We use the heat proof spray stuff to protect flameable surfaces.

Stainless steel sheet or diamond plate if you have the budget :)

    As usual.......It depends

If the HO will let us paint it, we try to match or accent the boiler. Think Viessmann silver or Buderus blue. I want to do one in silver with an orange accent stripe sometime.

    Backer board

We use 1/2" MDO plywood on all our jobs.It has a thin layer of paper so the paint goes on very even with no wood grain showing through. It's a type of plywood sign guys use.We use high gloss paint and always the same color blue, goes great with Viessmann boilers and doesn't show smudges and dirt.
