    Cool Tool...

Just got the new REMS Akku-Press 12v portable crimp tool and put it to work today (the day after shipment). The tool will squeeze from 1/2" to 1" fittings, ProPress or PEX fittings (different tongs required for each fitting. The head rotates 360 degrees and it's very light. The squeeze takes 6-8 seconds. I bought 2 batteries and get 40-50 pressings per battery. Recharge time is 1 hr. Gotta love this tool!!

The system is a Viessmann Vitodens 8/32 with 79g V300 tank. We've opted not to use the mixing valve station, and are piping directly off the Low Loss Header with a 26-64 pump. The heating curve will be set using the sensor in the LLH. This home has 3000SF RFH with a Gyp overpour. I'll post finished pics next week.

    REMS tools

I love my REMS power-press E unit. I have used it up to 1.25". I think that 1.5" would be the max for my unit. I am still the only one in my area with a press tool, or REMS tools for that matter. So what made you switch to the press fitting system? Was it time saving or not having any more solder leaks. Maybye Leo can talk you into the curvo.
I have discovered that the air purges from the system faster with the long bends. Also, I can insulate the pipes while I am piping, just slide the insulation on.

Keep the rest of us playing catch up!

    Time is Everything...

Or is it?. I converted to pressfittings 8 months ago. Both copper and PEX. We still make some solder connections, but 95% are pressed connections.

Easily a 30% labor savings. No Muss, No Fuss, solder, flux, fire hazard and burns, acetylene gas costs,etc...

Looked at the Curvo, but like to hard-pipe the systems we do. At some pint, we'll do the "near boiler" piping in Pex/Al/Pex, but for now...Propress

    Can I ask....

how much did the REMS unit cost? I've used the REMS power pipe threader for many years and it's one tough piece of equipment. Best Regards,

Looks like its right out of the cataloge. :)

I have the Rems threader and they do make great tools.

I guess our next Pro-Press just might be yellow.

    1200 is a good price

Does it come with jaws and if so what sizes. Pex Crimping is mentioned. What type of tubing uses crimping and how much are the jaws. Have been using the Rigid Propex for over a year now. We have the cordless but boy is it heavy. (Yeah, yeah I gots the spaghetti arms) Lighter sounds attractive to me not to mention crimping pex. I've been using the Wirsbo propex fittings and boy are my arms tired. I was thinking of getting the cordless expander but it aint cheap and I am. WW

    Larger pipe crimping tool...

I use the Rigid Propress cordless. I have two of them and one set of XL jaws that go to 4". So far so good. Have had them for about two years and no problems yet. Even with 2 to 4 inch stuff. Beats the snot out of trying to solder 3 and 4 inch stuff!

    Waiting.............

I keep waiting for someone from Viega or Ridge to drop in here and claim that their warranty is void if you use anything but THEIR OWN TOOL. Makes one wonder if they don't have much confidence in their fittings????..........

That being said, mine is yellow also. I have nothing but good things to say about Propress fittings and Rems tools.

    they lost that battle

    Steve,

Viega took the court case as far as it could go in the EU, and have finally accepted the judgement that they can not void warranties with tools that produce comparable crimping mechanics.

So if anyone comes around and says that, Viega will have some serious explaining to do in the courts.

The fact is that the warrantee covers the replacement or refund of the fitting in question. No labor, no incidental damage to expensive pieces of equipment. So you might get a few bucks or a new bag of fittings, neither of which would in any way cover the cost to you of a failure.

    tool compatability

I have been looking at these tools and waiting patiently. We have several larger semi-commercial jobs coming up with ½" - 2" pipe. I think I can recover the cost of the tool very quickly.

I was on Ridgid's website and their version of the "Tool Wall" leads me to believe that not all fittings are created equal. Nibco fittings require a separate set of jaws compared to the Viega fittings compared to....

I only bring this up because my concern would be availability of fittings. Do you guys have adequate supplys in your shop? Buy ahead for each job? Are you wholesalers adequately stocked?

    Regards,

    PR

    Tong options

Paul, you can expect that several other manufacturers will be selling pressfittings soon. Each will require their own proprietary tongs. This should reduce prices for the fittings across the board. In the meantime, we make sure our suppliers have ample ProPress stock. I deal with 2 wholesalers who sometimes have spotty inventory. We order in advance of larger jobs to make sure there are no backorders. Saving 30% labor costs for piping is a no-brainer. The tool is absolutely required.
