Can I Shut My Boiler Down For The Summer?

I'm a homeowner in the Metro NYC area. My house uses an oil fired boiler single pipe steam system for heat. We used to use it for tankless hot water also, but we recently installed a separate gas hot water heater. Since we don't need heat in the summer months, is it safe (or advisable) to shut the boiler down for the summer?

    Thanks a lot.

    Heres What I feel

I do not personally like to tell people to shut down their steam boilers especially if they are old. The reason is they the contraction from them cooling down might be enough to cause leaks in the seals. Especioally since you have a indirect coil in the boiler you used for domestic hot water. That is the first spot I would expect you to see a leak if it cooled down. I rather tell the person to turn down the aquastat to the lowest settings such as 100 low and 120 high, thuis way it still maintains the water temp and keeps the boiler warm. if it is a newer boiler I would feel more comfortable shutting it down for the summer.
Mad Dog or Steam head, whats your opinion? you guys do alot of steam.
