you have one of the finest vapor systems ever made..it can be saved..to answer some of your questions, you dont really have a hartford loop..you probably get very wet steam in its current configuration..steam pipe should be steel..fittings iron...that vent pipe into the chimney is fine, as a matter of fact its designed that way..i would feel safer with an aquastat strapped to its side just in case steam got that far i would want to have it switch off the boiler, otherwise i'd not be aware of a problem..the gortons on the same pipe should not be there..they should be on the steam mains end and the return end that drops to the wet return..steam should never be in the returns of a mouat system..some systems it was okay, like the o-e system..yours no..you should be able to always touch and hold the mouat waterseal trap, otherwise steam is to far..cept perhaps the coldest days of the year..the firing rate of your boiler is probably to high..i say that cause if its set where the factory wants it, its to high for a mouat system..the vapor setting should be about 4 ounces..does this help? there is so much in your pictures its hard to know where to start and stop...you have a fine system, it needs some loving tho..

    Gerry's our resident Mouat expert

so I'll second his recommendations..... to determine what size main vents you need, measure the length and diameter of each steam main. We can tell you what's needed.

If the vent pipe to the chimney is adequate, why would one need to add any other vents to the system?

    In a Mouat System,

why would one want to add vents if the vent pipe to the chimney is sized correctly?

Specific reference is boilermno copy.jpg or

    we didn't..

we took off the gorton #2 from the return pipe..raised the size of the vent to the chimney from 3/4'' to 1'' and installed a crossover trap at the end of the long main..we didn't want anything breaking the slight negative pull the chimney was exerting on the return system, hence the crossover trap..we borrowed warren websters and dunham companys ideas and incorporated them on Tonys Mouat system to aid in steam circulation.

    No vent makes sense!

I'd love to do a couple crossover traps, too- but am concerned residual condensate left in the water seal at end of the on cycle will do a dribble freeze to the return- particularly if it happens to be a meandering, un-insulated return to an outside wall.

'member the manometer bit? Well, 2 pipes with a radiator in the middle (heat side = mini vacuum, slow release) seems to make for a dandy upside down slow draining *u*, no?

As I've had my share of *frozen copper*, it's sort of a post traumatic thing with me.... am probably repressing the obvious.

Also, would we want to put something like the webbing they put into roof vents, or perhaps a 180 (down pipe) to discourage spiders, mud wasps, whatever from comandeering that nifty 1 inch round (year 'round climate controlled) nesting platform?
