    A King Valve

is a gate valve placed on a steam main where it comes out of the boiler header. This let the operator build pressure in the boiler for cleaning it out, without building pressure on the system. A valve on the return side was needed also.

We don't see king valves much these days, except at Mad Dog's house ;-) .

  • A king valve

is also what the valve on a Vari-Vac steam system was called. This valve fed steam from a boiler with steam pressure into a main that was in a vacuum, and it modulated to KEEP it in a vacuum. This is outdoor reset on a steam system.

I doubt he has you building a vacuum system, so this is just a footnote to history.

    KING VALVE

    THANKS,

THIS BUILDING DOES HAVE A VACUUM SYSTEM....

DOES THIS MEAN THAT THERE HAS TO BE A KING VALVE ON EACH OF THE BOILERS FEEDING THIS SYSTEM, AND DOES THERE HAVE TO BE A FIREMAN MANUALLY OPERATING IT TO KEEP THE SYSTEM IN A STATE OF VACUUME???

THERE ALSO IS A NEW VACUUM PUMP TO BE INSTALLED ALONG WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE 4 BOILERS.THIS SHOULD BE INTERESTING TO CONTROL.

"king valves" are a code item in nyc.they are used to do a hydrostatic test on the boiler.

The valve on a vacuum system

is usually controlled automatically, as is the vacuum pump. The ultimate vacuum system is (not "was", they still make this thing) as Noel says, the Dunham Vari-Vac. Unlike the usual vacuum system, this one has all parts of the system downstream of the king valve under varying levels of vacuum. In this way the system can vary the temperature of the steam, which means more economical operation.
