valves
jaybee, if you worked on some old equipment you would notice that the manual shut off valves the regulator the pilot safety and the automatic on off valve for the main burner were all seperate controls piped in series. In the early 50's to the mid 60's the control manufactures started to "combine" some of these functions into one control. I think the honeywell V8280 was the first real "combination" valve that had everything built in. It was modular so you could replace just one function and not have to sell a whole new valve. I think it was in 1979 that ANSI required that you have two gas valves that turn the burner on and off on each call for heat. The second valve was/is called "redundant". The double valve setup had been standard on large boilers for a long time. Ask your friend to explain the difference between standing, intermittent, and interupted pilots. bob0 -
