Safety Furnace Pipe ?

Hey guys, I haven't been on the wall in a while, but I thought someone here may know whats up with this. In the process of removing the chimney in my 110 year old house, I found this ductwork running up the wall. The house has hot water heat, and I always assumed it was original. This ductwork is stamped with "Safety Furnace Pipe Co." Detroit, MI patented 1888., and is double walled. It runs from just above the floor on the main level, up into the attic. As far as I can tell, there aren't any openings that would have gone into the rooms like a forced air furnace, so I'm not sure what it would have been used for. I figured with all the old houses you guys see, maybe someone has a clue?
Thanks for the help

The house may have originally had scorched-air
and the hot-water system was put in later as an upgrade. I find this a lot. The register openings in the rooms may have been covered over.
