What is an equalizer?

I have read many references to "equalizers" on steam systems on this board. What is an equalizer? Does anybody have a piping drawing that shows what it is?

    equalizer

    Usually it's a pipe that allows condensate from the steam header and main riser to drip back to the Hartford wet return. It equalizes the pressure at the boiler between the wet return and the steam main.
