This has been a very interesting read

I see your problems south of of "the line" are really no diferent than ours. I was going to jump in earlier when the discussion turned to replacing draft hoods with barometrics, but am glad I waited. While there used to be some negociating latitude with enforcing authorities, when it came to ensuring proper drafting, that is not the case any longer. The equipment MUST BE installed as engineered PERIOD!!. If it doesn't work -- find something that does.

I too remember the "eyeball and cigar" setup. It may not have been perfect but at least every old timer worth his salt did it. Today everyone is in too much of a hurry to take the time required. Most ASSUME (that word) the manufacturer engineered and set the equipment up at the factory and nothing further is required on field startup. NOT!!
While some of the old time finesse has been taken out of the equation when it comes to set up - the requirement to accurately check and adjust the parameters has become even more critical. In my area it is estimated only 1-2 in ten installers/service personell own or have used combustion analyzers to set up equipment at startup. Even less use test decices during routine service.
Until it becomes mandatory, or something serious happens, this practice will continue. Consumers installing their own equipment only adds to the problem.
In my opinion this just leaves another opportunity for another level of beauracracy - something we all need!! NOT!

I take Jim's Class every time it comes to town

because I always pick up something new. I originally, took his class - and met Mark Hunt in the process, because I always worried about CO and wanted to learn about it. Once you get the combustion testing eqiup all you wanna do is test and learn. Mad Dog
