To much venting?

I'm confused!
Has anyone read the article in January's Contractor Magazine
titled Steam System Chugs Thru Too Many Vents?

The author states that the converted Broomell system was retrofitted with too many air vents.

Is he making the case that the vents are in the wrong location or simply that the system is overvented?

It isn't clear to me what he is driving at.

Keith

    Clueless

I would be happy to if I had a clue as to how to make it happen.

    Still confused

Hey Pat- what kind of vents were on that Broomell? What were the lengths and diameters of the steam mains? How much radiation?

And is it still a Broomell, or did some nitwit change it to hot-water?

    clarification

    Hi Frank,

The point of the article was it was a Broomell upstairs at the radiation, but a confused mess with too many vents downstairs because someone re-piped the system at some time. As you well know, Broomell's used a central venting system. The dry return was also removed. I may not have gotten that point across too well. It was also the Christmas story for the December issue of Contracting Business. One of the editors gave it the headline of too many vents.

What I was trying to say was there were too many vents because of the re-pipe, not that you can have too much venting. I'm all for venting.

And sadly, the new buyer of the house insisted on a conversion to hot water. You can't win them all.

    Best regards, Pat

    Someone removed the dry returns?

Just when you thought you'd heard it all...... Well, we know what the basic problem was now.

I'll bet they're still having trouble with that system.

    sorry about that

    Hi Keith,

The editor wrote the headline for that, and it gave too much emphasis on the venting. I was trying to say that the system was a Broomell upstairs, but that at sometime the piping in the basement was changed, resulting in too many vents at too many locations for a system of its size.

I'm all for making sure that there is plenty of venting, but ten vents when two would be enough just causes a maintenance headache for the owner.

Sorry if it caused any confusion. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me here or at 513-703-5347.

    Best regards, Pat

    Thanks Pat

    For clearing that up.

The homeowner ended up paying for vents that were not usefull.
