Noritz is considered to be the Quality Brand

Noritz also makes the largest capacity model heater. I have an oil-fired tankless heater in my own house.

Rinnai
I guess I am an old dog but I am still thinking about the Rinnai. I put in a few with mixed reviews. Yet no one has had us rip one out. I do not know how they will do long term and I really like to vent them directly outside. Rather expensive to put in, so I have not been sold on the payback yet either. Lower supply water temps also effect the GPM rating. So for a summer home, or in NC I think they are better,,here in NJ or up by you....not sure yet.
Just my opinion at this time.0 -

The three or four I have
encountered all failed or were close to it due to moderately hard water.
I'd take an indirect any day. One less hole to punch through the wall anyhow.

I agree Ken, but do you know when you have those customers
that have seen it on the home shows, and just have to have it? Then, if you tell them the truth about it, they think A) you are afraid to try something new or Incompetant. So far, between you guys here at the Wall, and several other industry people I respect, the word is that they are very troublesome and finicky with water quality. I've got enough headaches with steam jobs. Do I need to take on another. I mean what do you do? I'll install it for you and set it up, but don't call me when it scales up in 3 months? Mad Dog

Hi MD,
I installed a Takagi, Aquastar 240 two years ago. It's fed cold water then goes into my 50 gallon gas fired heater and we can run the showers constantly without losing hot water.
It was done this way to heat my pool in the summer through a heat exchanger and it brings the water to 88 and maintains it easily.
It leaves one happy wife year round.
Two years isn't very long but there have been no problems with the unit.

Oil-fired Tankless Hot Water Heater
Hey Dawg, I know you asked about gas fired heaters but you might be interested in this oil-fired model.

I have the OM-148 at home and I am very impressed with it. I only have 1-1/2 bathrooms and we do not use all that much hot water but you can take a 4 hour shower and the water stays at the same temperature. The unit weighs 86 lbs and is made in Japan. As you know, the cold water temperature has been about 40 degrees lately and it has no trouble providing hot water. An interesting fact it that the unit will never run for more than 30 seconds after the hot water is shut off. I can tell you that it is very miserly on oil usage. With the price of fuel oil in Japan they have to be miserly.0 -
actual GPM flow rates
Multiply the gross input by .8 & then divide that by 833. Divide that by 60 (for minutes). That's the GPM flow rate for a 100 degree rise.
