Call a licensed tech and have them replace the thermocouple

    yep bad thermocouple

this is common. As the thermocouple gets older it is ok as long as it stays hot, but once it cools down, it won't generate the milivolts anymore. It was about ready to go in any case

    john..

Possibly the thermocouple as EBEBRATT-Ed said. I however think you may have another problem. If the GAS company had a problem with BOTH boiler and water heater, this could be the common link. Call the GAS company back (first make certain they don't charge for such a vist) tell them what you told us. Coincidence, maybe, but have pro check it out or get reassurance (before you pay) that this was the problem.

If it is then you should have been offered an explanation that when gas is shut off the thermocouples may cool down and when relit may not hold. If their policy is still in place they should come back and replace the thermocouples.

I would give them a call if I were you.
