surging boiler

Should there be any movement in the sight glass on the boiler? Mine moves about 1.25" every seccond. I have skimmed the boiler twice without any cleaner. Any advice on a good treatment to clean the system, and to leave in the system after. 1 pipe steam system 3 year old Burnham boiler. Is some movement normal?

    A bouncing gage glass of

1.25" total movement (+/- 3/4") is within my notion of "normal." Granted, it is on the high side of normal, but "normal" nonetheless.

I would leave it alone! The "treatment" of choice to clean the boiler water?

TSP. About one cup per 100MBTU's Just make sure you do not let the boiler steam when that stuff's in there. If you do, you'll have another bride you'll be married to.

    cheap and fast cleaning

In High school I learned to use a gallon of white distilled vinegar, run the boiler for a few hours then flush it, cheap, easy, not dangerous and works. done it many times on a new steam install

I did a TSP treatment on a boiler at a small school, it was firing about 8gph. i put the TSP in and left the header valve CLOSED over nite during a warmer March nite. Problem: The HELPFUL janitor saw the valve closed and HELPED me out by opening it up. We can laugh now but for the rest of that season and most of the next we were draining pork gravy from the condensate pump.
