The term Back-sliding could apply on this job, yes I think I see 5 solder joints!

Do you have the Propress fitting assembly line running 24/7?

Nice to have the skill to make an iffy job look good and use that Propress like a well tuned Violin,

    Just like Ron Jr.

So, today Milne set me up with this.

The Paloma Pac let go yesterday afternoon and we wanted to get a jump on it.We hiked up the 4 floors only to find no one home. My sidekick Jim suggested we set-up base camp on the second floor and call in some Sherpas for the final assent

Scott decided to replace the Paloma Pac with a Super Stor 30 Ultra in the closet next to the boiler"room"/closet. The wall hung Hydrotherm unit will see the expected end of life soon and we're thinking a Buderus GB142 will be a nice fit as long as there's room.

Ron, you don't have to worry about me stealing your job anytime soon! I'm too used to having room to move and breath for that matter. This is something that is a challenge, but I wouldn't want to see it every day. Enjoy. Chris

    Al,

    You gotta look closer brother!

There are at LEAST 15 soldered joints there.(check out the "rats nest"I had to cut in between the 2 return shutoffs AND put in a ball valves! Not to mention the domestic supply with the applied drain, zone valve AND the joints on the Mixing valve))

I took a ration of crap from My helper "Sherpa Jim", about that and I WILL say he was impressed that I still remember how to do it. 20 years has taught me SOMETHING, and soldering is 1 thing I don't think I could ever forget.
No LEAKS. I guess I haven't lost it yet. Chris

    Lchmb,

This biulding was converted to condos about the late 80's and they wanted individual heaters for each unit.It is situated right in downtown Manchester Ma. and the problems always seem to be on the top floor units.I believe the place was originally built as a place for sailors and dockworkers to live when they were in town. Most of the place looks like it had been some type of rooming house at one time.

The availabilty of space saving heaters and water heaters was extremly limited at the time, as you might well guess by the fact that the old Paloma Pac was LARGER than the Hydrotherm wall hung unit. They both put out about the same # of but's, but for different reasons.

The owner has been complaining about temperature variations in the hot water since she moved in but I think we got that licked.

The guys at the shop looked at the old Paloma this morning and were asking what it was. There weren't a whole lot put in around here and most have never seen them before. Chris

P.S. I'm not by any stretch of the imagination small, but my sidekick Jim is a giant! 6'+ anyway and we worked it out in our own way. He ran, I installed. He installed...I ran. Luckily all the guys I work with have a good grasp of the space time puzzle we face once in a while.J.C.A.

when that Taco X block comes out life will be better *~/:)

then we should be able to pack the boiler radiant manifold and the domestic water in a 12 cubic foot box :) enjoy all that extra space while you can :)
  • I missed this thread

Just slipped right by me . You know it's a tight space when you can't get one full pic of the job at all . Very nice work with the Propress tool . Do you find it hard to work with in closets like this ? I guess just as hard as trying not to burn down the closet wall with a torch , huh ?

Was this system really on the 4th floor ? Now that's what I call a hike to the truck .

    Nice Job!!!

Very nice Job, How do you like the Pro Press Fittings?
I was Loking at them myself, need to justify the extra cost per fitting, do you find it that much faster to use?

Now to the real questions... I have a post regarding this exact situation.
I also work in an area like yours, and have tons of paloma pacs, and celtics(hydrotherms). I believe the one in your photo is a natural draft, which is where I'm having the dificulty replacing.
Most of the buildings I'm dealing with are row houses, multi floored with common walls. I have no way to get a vent to an external wall. They all vent into a common chimney where a direct vent will not work.
    Please help with any suggestions....

P.S. I'm sure the door on that closet has all the nessary louvers for combustion air. LOL If its like the area I work The units are slamed into a tiny closet and everyone wonders why they carbon up...
  • Chris do not throw

that Paloma Pak away I would like to have it for my center. I can pick it up when I come up to speak to Scott's group on March 14th.

    Hey Dad

That space actually has a conbustion air make up duct. Someone was thinking at somepoint :)

Venting is always an issuie in these older homes. You'll have to find a way to bring individual vents thru the roof. These units are on the fourth floor and the roof is right there !

This was alot of work for Chris and he worked late on a Friday to finsh. Shows what a great guy he is, when his help left at 1:00pm and the boss took off skiiing at 1:30 pm. He stayed untill 6:00 pm to make sure everything worked well and all the limits shut off.

Thanks You Chris, you make us a better company.

    Scott

    Thanks Bill W.

Mr. Sweeny, I'm not sure if I should take that as a compliment or a fat joke/ slam....so I'll decide that you mean, that is a "working mans hand" and leave it at that.

I guess I should have shifted the camera to macro mode at the time. Chris

    Nice work

I showed the pictures to my apprentice this morning and he wanted to know where you guys are located. I can read his mind. He loves boiler piping and wants to do more. Good thing for me you guys are far away or he'd be gone. How long did the job take? I have a hard time guessing ahead of time, how much labor to charge. Sometimes you get so involved in the piping that the day flys away on you and the sun sets before you realise it. WW
