The VISIONPro 8000 from Honeywell has an optional remote sensor that can do exactly what you want to do.

Is there a thermostat that exists

where I can locate the thermostat in one room and the temperature sensor part in a different room in the house.

    Tekmar

has a few ways to do that, give them a call they are real helpfull. We have used the RTU's and the 040 controller. The remote thermostats can be controlled by the 040 if set up for it, or you can put one or two remote sensors on some of their stats.

    500 Series tekmar Stats

The 500 Series tekmar Stats can be used for the application you were refering to.

The 508 without setback, or the 510 with setback could be used and installed in a closet space (or any other for that matter) and run off a remote Sensor only, if so desired.

Bart refered to a Zone Control System that uses RTUs instead of Thermostats with similar capabilities.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to contact us directly at any time at 250-545-7749. Literature and information about the 500 Series Stats can be found at www.tekmarcontrols.com.
