modual steam heating system

Just replaced one large steam boiler with a four steam boiler modular system. Currently when one boiler kicks on all the boilers kick on. Couldn't this be designed so that only the necessary boilers turn on when needed. Is the 4 boiler system more efficiant than the one boiler we replaced. I am just not sure this has been designed properly and would like to hear what experts think.

  • There are a few ways to do that

Heat Timer makes a nice controller. Staging by pressure is also a way to drop out modules as the piping warms.

Boilerpro has some cool methods, too. I bet he'll be along shortly to comment.

    What brand boilers are they?

    You are too kind, Noel

I've only done one staged steamer and it does work nice. How I would try to control it would have alot to do with the type of system. As Noel said, staging on pressure would be a great start...Just set the pressuretrols at progressively higher settings.

For the two module boiler I installed in a single zone one pipe steam system, I just used a two stage thermostat to stage the boilers on and off as needed. I also installed a strap on aquastat at the end of the slowest to heat main to keep the second boiler on at cold start up until the mains were completely full of steam, then the second boiler stages on the thermostat. Despite being undersized for the radiation, this system is working well....even through the huge temperature changes we've been going through the last few weeks. It's been nearly 65 and also 0.

    boiler staging

no need to spend lots of money heat-timer is very expensive..look at johnson controls system 350 controls, you snap modules together, and can stage 4 boilers easily, not lots of money either

  • Noel,

    We have galaxy boilers (gxh 250, 150, 275, & 300)

each boiler has a series 42 low water cutoff pump controller

one 2 motor circulating pump (bell and gossett)

honeywell hi/low cutoff switches for each boiler

At this point i want to know are we set up the most efficiantly and or correctly.

  • Are these all on the same header?

Or maybe just all in the same building...

Can you tell us about the system(s) itself?
