A few jobs - DF
Dan Foley
Member Posts: 1,266
I finally had a chance to download my digital camera over the weekend. Here are a few jobs we have been working on recently. The first is a Dunkirk 90+ we did late last fall. This was the first one we have installed. It went smoothly and the aluminum block heats up in a hurry. We used the chimney as a chase for the intake/exhaust. -DF

Commercial
This is a commercial building using a Vitodens 200 to heat the slab. The 3/4" pex going into the slab feeds remote manifolds located throughout the building. We started this one in mid December during a cold snap. Needless to say, it condensed like mad until the slab came up to temp. -DF

New House
This was a new house we wrapped up in January. It uses an MZ to heat DHW and a combination of slab radiant, Quik-Trak radiant, and copper fin BB through a Wirsbo ProPanel. -DF

Another new one
This is a work in progress - a new house in Alexandria, VA. The Vitgas 100 supplies a Vitocell tank, multiple radiant zones and sevral radiator zones. We are also installing two Unico systems and a Mitsubishi split system for cooling. -DF

Interesting...
As usual, your installations are neat, easy to follow, easy to service. The huge low-loss header (LLH) should do wonders to keep the Vitodens and the rest of the system happy no matter what the flow conditions are.
...perhaps my eyes deceive me, but does this system have multiple vents close to each other? I thought the LLH had one, then I see a spirovent next to it... then there is the red thing next to the pump which I thought was a vent but may be a flow check instead...
Confusedly, and decidedly homeownerish, I await your enlightment! :-)0 -
Nifty
That looks like a gravity conversion, judging by the pipes you're attached to above. The pro-press neatens the job, and small details like preventing the condensate on the water feeder line from rotting the BX lines is a nice touch. I also like how the expansion tank is out of the way...
Is the probe in the T under the drain/vent a LWCO or LPCO? If so, what kind?
Very good work!
BTW, this is a reply referring to the very first message posted in the thread...0 -
Air Vents
Hi Constantin,
Thank you for the comments. You are indeed seeing two vents (the third item you mentioned is a B&G Flo-Control check valve). The low loss header has a manual key vent that is used to bleed air. We prefer to install another auto air separator on the system side of the LLH. Overkill, maybe but it avoids callbacks. I imagine the key vent could be replaced with some fittings and an auto vent to allow automatic air elimination. -DF

You are right - this is a gravity conversion in a turn of the century rowhouse in the Adams Morgan section of NW DC. The probe you are referring to is a M&M RB-24 Guard Dog LWCO. Thanks for the compliments on our work. -DF

Interested.
Four Jobs, four different boilers. Just wondering what the driving factor is. Also, as always tremendous workmanship.

Answers: The Dunkirk was a job abandoned by the original installer. We completed the job as a favor for our local rep. We have installed MZ's for many years. We took on Viesmann last year as our "top shelf" line and have been very pleased with the results. -DF

Pro-Press
I like the clean work keep it up!! Are you using the cordless propress or the corded? Any feedback about tool longevity and durability?

Pro-Press
We have both the corded and cordless tools. I intend to pick up the smaller cordless as well. We have been using the Pro-Press fittings for almost a year and love them - except for the male adapters.
We have had a high incidence of leakage on the 1" and larger male adapters. We have tried just about every combination of tape, dope, blue block, threadseal, hemp with the same results - leaks. It appears that the threads are cut wrong or are tapered wrong. In some cases, the male adapter is bottoming out before the joint is tight. It is only on the male adpaters so we stopped using them and sweat these fittings.
An interesting aside - I was at ASHRAE last week and stopped by the Ridgid booth. I mentioned to the fellow in the booth that we loved their product but mentioned that we were having a problem with the male adpters. I was only trying to inform him of the problem and gather some information - not create a problem. He immediately went on the defensive and said that he had never heard of this and there was NO WAY they were having a problem. He suggested that perhaps we did not know how to properly thread a joint. Nice! First deny the problem exists and then insult the intelligence of your customer. Memo to Ridgid: mix in some Dale Carnegie training for your reps.
Contrast this with the Cimberio rep. Again, we love their product and have used several hundred of their press valves. Recently we have had some problems with one paricular size of their valves. The fit was so tight, the o-rings were tearing when we inserted the copper. The rep indicated that the original shipment of this particular size was manufactured with a very tight tolerance and that they were aware of the issue. He said to return the case of fittings to my local rep and they would exchange them with the correct tolerance valves. That, my friends, is how to aknowledge and handle a problem. -DF

propress
Nice work ad always,Dan.
We've seen a few problems with 1" propress male adapters, but nothing large scale and mostly when connecting to something stainless. They just don't seem to have the feel and grab of a copper fitting. It's almost like they are too hard or tempered incorrectly.0
