What do you guys recommend between the sub-floor and the quik Trac for a vapor barrier when you have 3/4" hardwoods on top?

It is a framed floor and not a slab.

    I have

never seen or heard of any one using a vapor barrier in that application. I just nail it to the subfloor . I have done several with hardwood, it has never been an issue.

If you were going over a concrete slab I would think something would be required. Did you check with Wirsbo or Stadler-Viega?

    Quick track

We attach the quick track directly on top of the subfloor and staple the snot out of it.Have never had a complaint of a squeek.

Thanks guys! I just noticed that when I ripped up my old hardwoods there was some sort of paper there. I guess it was for noise?

Building Paper--probably "Red Rosin" brand. Used between flooring layers for noise and dust reduction. Still available. Not a vapor barrier.

    Paper

I've asked flooring guys about why they put down rosin paper and have never gotten a great answer.I've heard it helps eliminate squeeks, but the squeeks come from the nails rubbing not the wood so it's of little value.I've heard that it's for moisture but it does nothing for that.Another told me the hardwood just slides on it better to help in the installation,ok.About the best answer I've heard is "because thats the way we've always done it"

    A moisture retarder

is one of the reasons given for felt paper under hardwood, as well as dust, noise, and slip sheet for quick installation as John and Mike mentioned.

Always good to check the moisture level in the subfloor before any layers are placed over, be it hardwood or dry radiant systems. Less then 10% is the number to shot for.
