steam question

Looking at a job today where some of the return lines run horizontally along the wall before dropping into the wet returns. This will place some sections above the water line of a new boiler if it's sitting on the floor. Will I need to lower the pipes or raise the boiler to keep things right?
If so,raising the boiler will be easier, but how high do I need to get the water line in relation to these pipes?

THANKS Phil

    steam answer

Phil you dont have to lift the the boiler up in the air if you dont want to, you could leave it on the floor and pipe a false water line on your return, just try to mimic the old water line. there are diagrams in the lost art of steam heat book....giddeee up

    I checked that out

I have to go back and measure things to see if it's doable, however it's much simpler to get the boiler up off the floor a bit if that will do it

    Returns

If those horizontal returns don't get steam, no problem. Where does the mains vent sit? Steam won't go where air can't get out.

    returns

the vents are at the ends of the mains as usual, up high. They all drop below the water line individually before they connect together, so the steam won't be able to cross between them. But will I be better off getting the water line above those lines? My question I guess is how high above?

    Thanks Phil
