Best boiler for steam modernization

From my reading on the Wall, my impression is that all the name brand steam boilers are pretty much the same. I need to heat 550 EDR, so is a Weil McLean as efficient as is available for steam.

What oil burner will be the quiestest and have a damper to close when it is not operating?

I've replaced all my vents per Steamhead's advice and my present 70 year old boiler is working rather well, but with oil prices, it seems like it would be wise to update the boiler this summer...unless someone can suggest otherwise.

    best steam boiler

Steve, we do 20 steam boiler a year and ALWAYS use Weil McLain. In my book, the best one out there. I find the Carlin burner the quietest in these boilers. The Riello works well also. We don't use dampers on these boilers as they are pretty tightly constructed and standby losses are at a minimum. Also, just another piece of equipment to go bad.

A cpl months ago I would have said a Burnham V8 but now I would use a Peerless for steam. WM uses o-rings between the sections and the top one is dry in a steam boiler. Peerless uses push nipples that wont dry up and crack like the WM was known for in the past. I havent seen it happen on the gold boilers yet but I learned from past experiances I wont use o-ring boilers for steam unless I have to
