LEAKING RELIEF VALVE
mgs
Member Posts: 5
We have a relief valve that is leaking in the field. First we checked out our expansion tank to verify that it's sized correctly and the pressure is set correctly. The fill valve was also checked and is working properly. The contractor has replaced the relief so we are good there.
What else can we look at?

I assume it is still leaking
So the next question is Do you have a domestic coil? The coil could be leaking increasing the pressure. Also does the boiler gauge work. We have had bad gauges and adjusted the feeder and it was actually too high.0 -
LEAKING RELIEF VALVE
Yes, the relief valve is still leaking. There is not a a domestic hot water coil in place. This is happening on two replacement boilers which the contractors is involved with.
I'd appreciate your input.0 -
So these
are both replacments ?
Are there cast iron radiators on the jobs ? They could have installed expansion tanks that are undersized. C.I. rads need larger tanks for all the volume of water.
Whats the high limit set at ?

I agree with Scott
and also maybe they installed the reducing valve in a bad spot and it is sensing pressure drop when the circulator comes on.0 -
Are you sure the
expansion tank is sized properly for the system cpacity and boiler rating? How many floors are above the boiler, vertical feet?0 -
relief valve
is the relief valve sized right? Also,, where does the feed tie into the system?0 -
expansion tanks and glycol
is there antifreeze in the system??? water expands at a higher rate with glycol added then just straight water and might need a bigger expansion tank on it to accomodate........had the same problem with two boilers he installed? glycol in both these boilers???0 -
on new installs?
this would not be a normal occurance ....there fore i would ask the guy if he has changed anything in the designe of his systems recently....start there . changing out parts and pieces on new boilers, isnt, well... usual. "a relife valve in the field" meaning at a remote station with heat exchanger, seperate field system?....
here is a piece of sabotauge i once witnessed..."some one letting the pressure off theboiler, via the expansion tank!" there are like possibilities that start at,; isnt properly purged ,too high a temp, wrong expansion tank, lyin tri indicator, defective purge valve, improper pressure on supply feed water,no back flow of some sort, wrong placement of feed water into the system ruptured coils, internal leaks of boiler (although unlikely) the wrong size relife valve, maybe even the placement of the recirc in relationship to the point of no (or approximately equal to) pressure. maybe the bypass is piped differently and is causing the hassel with no secondary high limit these are just guesses ...i honestly cannot answer this question with out asking more and "copping a visual".0
