Steam TRVs on Ask This Old House

during a break in skiing on Saturday . Rich Trethewey installed one in a apartment where the rad was overheating . Didn't catch the manufacturer name . It was a 3 piece valve - the body , the T-stat part and a vent . Anyone use these yet ? Do they hold up well ? Does the whole unit have to be changed after a few years of use ? Thanks for any help .

    sorry

This was on a one pipe system and of course works by limiting the vent from opening thereby controlling steam going into the rad. Haven't used one yet, trying to talk a cust into them on a job, but they just spent about 35k with us putting in a new boiler in that bldg.

they do have a replaceable core

  • We went to the Poconos

Stayed in a real nice Villa at a resort , pretty cheap too . Skiing wasn't that great . All slush that turned into a layer of ice at night . Thanks for asking Todd .
  • That's good

At $100 a pop , I wouldn't want to recommend to the customer to change the whole TRV every 5 years like we do with regular vents . Thanks Jeff .

    they were danfoss

for one pipe steam. The trv works by limiting the vent from working and I believe they have a replaceable core, at least the other Danfoss do

    3 weeks

From today I'll be in Whistler!! I look forward to this every year. The 2010 Olympics are being held there so it will be ruined after that.

    I hope

that Richard is not quoting prices on TV again. He got his hide tanned once for quoting a price on RFH tubing that still lives on today.

We use Danfoss Ron, and the vent is replaceable. In fact, the vents last longer because they see less use. I've reduced the energy consumption by half in an apartment complex that we've installed them in. Good stuff on a one pipe steam system.

    Danfoss 1PS

was what was installed. Rich quoted a general price which was very close to list price for the 3 pieces combined. He also did a good job explaining how the 1 PS works for the average consumer. Something I never thought about until he asked me how they worked. I have gained an even greater respect for Dan as he is the master of making the complex simple!

    No need

to replace the valve, operator and vent every 5 years. The valves and operators will last quite some time. May need to change the vents down the road. The fuel savings will more than offset the install cost over time!
