Main Vent sizing for vapor

a Gorton #2 on the long main and two Gorton #1 vents on the short one. You should install them just before the pipes reduce to 1-inch, and plug the hole where the old vent is.

There are tables in Dan'e "Dead Men's Steam School" video seminar workbook, but they may be revised before long thanks to Gerry Gill's hard work.

If the steam jumps across from one main to the other and shuts the vent on that main before all the air is out, you can either install a water seal in one side or just drop both mains into a wet return before they connect together.

    How do I figure capacity

I've seen some of the recent posts about main vent sizing, but I cannot find any tables or calculations in The Lost Art, or on Gorton's site. Is there any such info?

I could tell you that I have two 2" mains, one goes 43 feet before it reduces to 1". The other goes 28 feet before it reduces to 1". The 43 goes another 12 feet and the 28 goes another 9 feet where they merge to return (dry) for 21 feet before turning back into the boiler. The rad return has an old bi-metal air eliminaator on it, but the supply main is not vented at all.

In addition to learning how to calculate for a main vent myself, I was also interested in calculating how far the steam in the longer main would get before the new vent closes on temperature from the other main. I don't think that I can place two seperate vents, because one will close from steam from the other.

Thanks for all of the good reading.

    Jake
