I made a mistake

to wire a system for me. I provided him with diagrams, verbal instruction, and left the paperwork from the products for him. The system was still wired wrong. My question now is, about Wirsbo MVAs. The electrician wired ALL the red wires to R1, and ALL the yellow wires to Y1 on the three zone control moduel. Would this dammage the MVAs? For obvious reasons, they wouldn't work the way they were done, and when I corrected the problem they didnt work either. I am hoping they are not dead. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Chuck

Call Urell
Chuck if your having trouble you should call Bill Reid at Urell he can walk you through the wiring and the operation of the Wirsbo Telestat.0 -
I dont think
what your descdribing would hurt the telestat. If you applied line voltage thats a different thing. If he used the R connections and the Y connections I dont think it would hurt anything. In case your not aware Y is the 24 v circuit for the thermostats, the red is the end switch tied to the boiler it tells the boiler theres a call for heat. Are the zone boards display showing any sign of voltage? LEDs on or off?0 -
Gotta love those electricians
Had a good one yesterday. Complete loss of control on a 4.5 million modulating boiler. New Maxitrol amplifier installed recently. The electricians ran the low voltage control wires through a 600V 3ph conduit/junction box. Mfg states plainly in their literature these lines must not be anywhere close to high voltage and MUST be separately shielded! Sparky failed on both counts! Customer saved $350 on original control wiring, only to pay me $725 to find, fix the problem and replace the damaged amplifier.0 -
Yup. Just wired one yesterday on a new "Absolute Air" make up air unit. The instructions clearly state schielded cable or run in seperate pipe.
Some things you just can't cheat on. I other thing is you can't cheat the wire size. When they say 18ga is only good for 50 feet believe it. Trace those circuits sometime-that 24v goes from the roof to the remote panel and back several times. We had a 60 foot run and went to 16ga in a seperate pipe. The trouble is getting schieldsd cable larger than 18ga is difficult-usually has to be ordered.0 -
A fresh set of eyes
figured out what was going on this morning. T-stats were not installed, so I made jumpers across the T-T conections on the relays to fire the pumps and boilers. I was not paying enought attention to the 3 zone control moduel. After all, I knew I had a call for heat, plus it was 830PM. I looked at it today, and realized, that he had not hooked the 24VAC transformer into the system. Once I rewired the MVA's and added a transformer, all was working well. His answer "I figured it would get the 24VAC from the relay." I asked him if he had ever seen voltage jump that far?

A fresh set of eyes always helps, right Chuck

Amazing what a good night's sleep will do (assuming this job didn't keep you awake) When I had my own business I had a fellow working for me who is a great mechanic, but a few times a year he would call me because he was really stumped. I would go out to give him a hand and would walk in the door and fix the problem. Of course he bailed me out at least as many times as I helped him. Had less to do with our technical ability-sometimes you can't see the forest through the trees. How many times have we all "fixed" jobs while driving home. Sometimes the best thing to do is to walk away from it go back the next day sit down and make a sketch or drawing of the problem and the solution will jump out.
I'm also an electrician(3 states) and find that most electricians who work in the field don't know controls at all. They can pull wires and run pipe but thats it. The electricians who are knowledgeable on controls are usually "in house" electricians who work in factories etc.0 -
Absolute Air
Is that a unit manufactured in Calgary Canada? 10-4 on the 16ga shielded. That is ALL we use for control wire. Locally Texcan seems to have a good stock.0 -
Thanks for the info. Worked on a Stirling indirect fired a few years ago that I didn't wire. The electrician used 18 ga. Really wasn't his fault as I went over the installation manual several times and they didn't specify a wire size. This thing was nuts. Rewired with 16 or 14 and all was well. I am leary of these things after that-never want to be undersized-learned the hard way.0 -

You didn't answer my "absolute Air" question0 -
Not sure where the unit is manufactured. I know that Absolute Air is located in Michigan-haven't got the information with me at the present time0
