Erie Motortrol

I'm dealing with a system of hydronic air handlers (2) run off of a Polaris water heater. The hydronic side goes off to the air handlers with 2 risers and 2 pumps with 2 Erie Motortrol's. The Eries don't last all that long. Is there a reason to not just drop in a check valve and a 24 volt relay to turn on the pumps when the thermostat calls for heat? Is there a better zone control to use in Lieu of the Erie? I'm in Arizona where hydronic heating of any kind is fairly rare so please excuse my ignorance. The Erie control is rebranded Mor-Flo American which was the old company name for the company that made the original Polaris heaters. I'm wondering if this system all got bought at the same place. This controller is from 1991 but I'm told the motor has been replaced repeatedly. Thanks for any help and or advice. fjm
