What are we doing???
I got a kick out of reading "just 2psi" What are we doing?
It is somewhat discourging to keep fixing the same thing all the time. Jobs are being installed wrong all the time. Some people in this business just won't do any training or reading outside of work (I do and I still can't keep up with everything) some do, some don't.
I guess it's job security to keep fixing the "some dont's" work, or is it?
I look at it another way. If customers didnt have to keep paying contractors to fix these bad jobs-maybe they would have the money to spend on doing real good quality work.
And the rest of us who make mistakes but work our tails off trying not to, and try to do the best job we can(under difficult circumstances) wouldnt have to prove to the customer that we are not all crooks who do lousy jobs and are trying to steal their money. These people need to get out of this business if they are not interested in doing quality work and investing some time and money and educate themselves.
I'm sure there are half a dozen mispelled words up there!

I very much enjoyed reading...
... "The lost art of steam heating". It really opens your eyes to the systems that used to be installed before the US manufacturers got together and set that 2psi standard to level the playing field and improve safety a great deal. As a result, we don't hear about too many boilers sailing through the neighborhood these days...
You bring up a good point however, and that is education and training. It's amazing what habits form that are based on nothing more than old-wives-tales, etc. and are handed down from "Master" to Apprentice. Reading and understanding books like the lost art or the IBR manual can be challenging yet rewarding at the same time. If I were in the heating trade, a number of books would travel with me to the jobsites, as I love to have references handy. Measure twice, cut once, and all that.0 -
Exactly
Exactly my point! Ignorance is bliss I guess! I'm the type of tech that, if there's something that I don't quite grasp right away. I will at least go to great lengths & my best effort to try to research the problem & understand it. But there are just some people that don't want to learn anything new & could care less what kind of a job they do in the field. For those people, I really feel sorry for you more that anything.0 -
