It depends -
on a regular basis - I travel 4 - 6 hours one way. And we are currently negotiating a service contract for communities well within the Artic Circle. Most times - its for boilers that are painted orange or silver - but we are known to commission almost anything that burns a fossil fuel, heats water, makes steam or drys wood. Once in awhile we even keep the toes of some folks warm - and we "sub" our gas & combustion services to other contractors through B.C. and Alberta. Our main policy is to provide first class service - supporting first class customers - and make a tidy profit along the way. (read Ellen's books)So there you have it - part combustion/heating/steam/gas/oil mechanic nut - part gypsy.0 -
As far as it takes
My normal service area is within a 30 mile radius fo my office. I'll do almost anything HVAC in that area.
For 'wet' stuff, I'll travel as far as I have to, providing an agreement is made for travel time. I've driven 2 plus hours for a job before becuase no one else knows how (or wants) to do it. As Dan says, in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is King.

Being in Maine, which is not known for being a thriving metropolis, customers are far and wide.

I travel quite a bit
I have done jobs that are 2 hours each way. For these hotel rooms and meals go into the client's bill as does excess mileage. (see below)
My standard work area a one hour radius of my shop. I allow 40 minutes a day and 40 miles as "commute" time, so anything after that is billed out as a service call fee at full hourly rate + IRS mileage rate. I ocassionally get complaints about this, but it is the cost of business. If they don't want to pay it, they should call someone else closer or is willing to pay the customer for the priviledge of working.

Travel
The reason I asked is I have someone that is 1400 miles away and wants me to come check out a 3500 sqft remodel to install radiant, so I was wondering if you guy's had a travel policy, how you charge.

Wow
That IS travel!! Did I read that right. Either this person knows you're good and respects you ... or ... they are desparate. (No negative pun intended) The commute will definitely be costly. That said, I have travelled up to 1000 miles to try to solve long standing issues. My customer was serious paid for my time and expenses.0 -
Las Vegas
It is a referal from a customer we installed a radiant floor system for this last year, their frends are remodeling their house in Las Vegas and can't find anyone that they feel comfortable with.
I wonder what it takes to get a contractors licence in Nevada?

Can't fault you
for that referral. What about just designing and overseeing the project with a local small shop. You should be able to maintain good quality control. IMHO0
