Glycol in heating systems

I'm looking for an effective and efficient way to add glycol to a hydronic system. Also a way to measure and/or check (test)the precentage of glycol to water mixture, so I know that there is a 30%, 50%, etc. of glycol in the system.

A pump
Teel has a nice 1/2 hp transfer pump that works well. Sometimes I use a small "Little Giant" submersible sump pump in an open 5 gallon bucket, for small amounts.
You need to somehow calculate how much your system holds. Or else do a complete drain down and add the premixed solution.
If you just add straight glycol to what you have plan on wasting a bit till you hit the correct percentage.
Test strips or refractometers are the best way to check freeze protection.
I'd like to see you add a cleaner and run it for a few days before you add glycol. Then a complete drain down measuring the fluid as it drains to get a system capacity figure. 5 gallon plastic buckets work well for this.
You will need to have fill and purge valves in the proper location to pump the glycol throughout the system.
Best to get help from someone that has been down this road, glycol is pricey stuff to flow down the drain or dilute to a usless level

Solaroll whats the best treatment for C.I. boilers subjected to this tubing amongst others aswell. Rust inhibitor.?? Got a lot of these type systems here and would like to offer treatment that will ward off deterioration o2 ingress any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks0 -
Excellent question
at some point they sludge or corrode beyond salvage, in my opinion.
The real hard magnatite (sp) stuff you won't get out. Kinda welds itself inside the ferreous components. Flush em, if the loops still circulate, and isolate the ferrous components with a HX or go all non ferrous, boiler, pumps, etc.
Don't offer the owner any kind of warranty or life expectancy. Make mental notes of a retro fit plan as you snoop through the home
In all fairness these systems are going on 20 years. Much better track record than some of the products that came after them That close spaced counterflow tube provided an excellent consistent floor temperature. Not much on the market today comes close to the eveness of an old SR floor.
