Cad Cell Burner Set Up

I just finished reading Combustion & Oil Burning Equipment by George Lanthier, I read about testing the presence or absence of smoke using the cad cell and a ohmmeter. I'm going to try this during our next training session, my question is would this be suffcient in a pinch to balance the burner operation?
Does anybody conduct this test?I have to say George I thoroughly enjoyed your publication.

    I would not set up combustion using the cadd cell, use bacharach equipment. The cadd cell is a burner safety device. I'm sure you are aware of that. Cadd cell resistance values are an indication of cadd cell position and functionality, but yes these values will give an indication of flame performance.

    For the record,

    I don't recommend it as a final test level either. It's used to put you in the ballpark. You should never COMPLETE the setup of any burner or stoker with anything but combustion test equipment.

    Cad Cell

    I know that you wouldn't want to set the final setting with the cad cell, I just thought that was cool, it never crossed my mind that you could judge flame performance with the cad cell, I just thought it was a safety device, what reading that did was open my eyes, so much to learn. For the final performance I have a standard Bacharach kit with smoke tester plus a bacharach fyrite 125 pro.

    Unfortunatly there is no known point to tune for. When the flame is too lean, the flame gets brighter. When the flame is rich, it gets dimmer. Brookhaven National Lab developed a flame quality monitor that works from a cad cell. It detects a miss tune by looking for brightening Or dimming from the referance reading that was established from the flame after it was adjusted with instruments.

    Honeywell markets a Flame Quality Monitor...

    as our QS7100F 1001. It works with the R7184 series oil primary, and is plugged into the port on the control. When you get the burner set up properly with instruments, you push the red button. The control watches the flame, and remembers what it looked like. If the flame degrades for any reason, the control can sound a local alarm, or activate a phone dialer to call for service before a soot-up occurs. We also offer the pen-sized QS7100D1003 for use with the R7184 or the L7124 aquastat. It reads cad cell resistance, voltage or well temp. There's also a QS7100T 1004, a leave-behind monitor that watches many oil burner parameters, and records them on a strip-chart or prints them out. It's best use is for those maddening intermittent problems that only happen when no one's around.

    cad cell burner adjustment

    techs that work with me learn that you first find out where the smoke is by adjusting the air closed find smoke, ck co2 open till smoke goes away ck co2 then lower it 1-1.5% to maintain a clean fire then check cad cell reading we keep ohms under 800 also make sure air gates and fans are clean never adjust by ohms readings
