Dodging bullets! (PAH)

Dave Yates (PAH)
Dave Yates (PAH) Member Posts: 2,162
Just before lunch today, one of our mechanics was caught in a hail of bullets and narrowly escaped death. One of the .40-caliber bullets tore through the van's side-wall just a few feet behind him & at head height as he turned a corner at the end of our block.

The tripple homicides that occured with a 12-hour span (our neighbor included) were solved and the shooters captured early this AM in a series of raids, so no connection.

While working with the police and scouring the alley for shell casings (five found), a well-known (to the cops) drug dealer walked by & they think he was the intended target.

The number of times we've found ourselves responding to middle-of-the-night emergency service calls in rough areas of town certainly gave us pause for thought after this morning's incident.

    Unbelievable...

I am glad to hear your mechanic was able to dodge the bullets. He must have had an angel watching over him.

The good thing is that the bad guys are caught. Too bad three people had to die. Goes to show and remind everybody that you never know when your time is coming. Live life as best as you can and be the best person you can be as there may or may not be enough time to ever make things better.

This also reminds me of the sad incident in Alberta last week, where four RCMP (cops)officials were ambushed and killed while going about their duties to protect the innocent and ordinary citizens.

I am happy to hear that you and...

...your employees are OK. It's terrifying to consider how cheap life can be to some people. I am glad that some of the alleged shooters have been caught. If guilty, I hope they'll have many years to reconsider their crimes while serving time... However, the death of your neighbor still saddens me. Such a shame, such a waste.

    WOW

I would not have thought York is a dangerous town, especially your office!

Glad to hear it's only damage to a truck, and not one of your own!

    Stay safe!

    a link!

Here's a link to the article and photo of our truck in this morning's paper

    http://ydr.com/photos/local/1/0/0/3/2/

This morning, sheriffs were fired upon while serving a warrant, one deputy hit and the suspect killed in the shoot-out.

We're beginning to feel like we all need to be carrying heat!

    York

    Dave,

My only experience with York PA was stopping for an overnite stay at a friends sister's house on the way to Richmond Speedway a good fifteen years ago. It struck me as a nice, quiet town. Druggies erode every city and town they fester in. I am glad your mechanic is OK, and I thought of that tragic waste of the young women's life all day yesterday. How fragile our world is indeed.

    Peace,

    But wait,

What happened to Homeland Security? You mean we can't go about our business without fear of being shot in "Ourtown"? What kind of freedom is this? We sure have a lot of housekeeping to do!

And tell your gang to rig armorplate in the vans. It is not worth being dead for a piece of cast iron.

that installed that Heatilator fireplace in your photo. They've told me it can be a rough town. Wow! I'll share this with them. Glad all are ok.

God dispatched an angel that night

I stopped going to shaky neighborhoods at night years ago - ain't worth it...new meaning to the word blood money. When you've gotta have a shotgun between the seats and someone to baby sit the van...it is no longer worth it. Mad Dog

  • Times are changing

I worked in different parts of NYC for almost 10 years , in high crime areas . Not once did we hear a shot fired . We did get buckets of copper fittings stolen , but that was very infrequent . It is going on around 8 years since I've worked in there . I hope you're mechanic is doing good Dave . Heating is a noble profession , but it ain't worth getting shot . I would definitely want to think about carrying a pistol licence if I had to work graveyard in the tough areas .

    conceal carry permit

Pa is an easy state to get a CC permit. It took me 6 days to get mine and I don't even live in the state! Sent to Centre County Sherrriff

    wishing for the old days...

Wow Dave. I'm glad your guy is OK. These days you can't say it's only in New York or Detroit or wherever, even here in Minneapolis there is enough bad news to go around. No good answers for how to go forward. I don't personally subscribe to the notion of packin heat, but I understand those that would. How about coming to Wetstock in June and enjoying some of our beautiful lakes and other good stuff? It's really pretty mellow around here. The biggest hazard is wives with plastic at the Mall!

    Take care,

    I would imagine

new underwear is in order. That is one scary situation to be in. Glad to hear your help is AOK. I was in Paterson (NJ) on a midnight call to a cops house where gunfire is an on the hour event. Not the greatest neighborhood, but by far not the worst either. Went out to the truck for an ignition transformer and went back in the house. Not five seconds after I got back in the basement, I heard "firecrackers", then the sound of glass breaking. Those "firecrackers" were gunfire erupting at a neighborhood gin mill a block away. Two shots entered the house where I was working and lodged in the livingroom and dining room walls respectively. I had just walked through those two rooms to get to the basement. Also, ultimately, the house was found to have been hit by four shots altogether. The neighborhood dope dealer started the whole fracas and was shot in the **** himself by rival factions. Maybe they were aiming for his brains. The cool part of the service call was that I was able to get a cast iron radiator with an electric heating coil screwed into the bottom radiator tapping. On the element it has an adjustable thermostat and says "Jiffy Electric Heat". I've NEVER seen a cast rad. with an electric element and have NOT been able to get any info on this. Anybody ever heard of such a setup?? It had to be AT LEAST 50 years old. I'll have to bring it up to Dans heating museum one of these days. Its a relic.

    Tommy,

I've never seen one but I made one. A water heater screw in element will screw into 1" NPT bushing on the end, aqustat on the other end, airspace at top for expansion. WOrks sweet. I even made a radiant floor display using an element screwed into a tee.

Very cool that it was actually manufacture. Can you post a pic?
