Help - steam boiler makes shuddering noise after turning off

I havent gotten my steam boiler ( one pipe system ) tuned this year...many times after is done firing I hear a shuddering ( vaccuum ? ) type noise afterwards for about 5 seconds...what the heck is that ? thanks

    Oil or Gas? Also name and/or model number wouldnt hurt.

    it is oil. unit is about 30 years old ( burner newer - Carlin ? )...I lived in the house 8 years...first time its ever done this - the sound is almost like a purring / vibration sound...only happens after unit has been on...then it shuts down...then purrs for about 5 seconds then silent...thanks for nay help - Dan

    if it is a carlin burner, ther's a good chance the end cone is coated with carbon. usual cause is too much draft, it pulls the fire away from end cone so the nasty stuff doesn't burn off like it should. very common in windy areas.

    Sounds like

    flame continues after burner cuts out. You'd probably be best served by contacting your oil companys service dept or someone else qualified to take a look. I think service may be in order.

    Very common with 99FRD, Also need to check pump presure and angle of nozzle. Carlin's like 60 degree nozzles
