Confused. How can this happen?
Snow blocked the outside exhaust vent for the furnace? Why didn't the furnace trip out on safety? Built in redundant safety controls prevent an appliance from firing without draft right? All the ones I use won't allow ignition without proving air flow.
Why did this happen and why is it on the news so much?

Pressure switches
I've seen so many "pressure switches" that DO NOT shut equipment down when they are suposed to that it would make your head spin.
How many of these "safety" features do you think get tested when equipment is installed?
I should write a book about all of the situations I have come across since I started paying attention.
So while this may come as a suprise to many of you, it is no suprise to me.
If you really want to understand this stuff, get to a Jim Davis class. You won't walk out as the same contractor you walked in as.
I like seeing the attention CO is getting here, but now it's time for the next step. Learn to see the problem before it becomes one.
I have 35 Google hits in my e-mail as I type this. With the ice storm in the south, I expect that number to double within the next 48 hours.
BTW, those safety switches were NOT tested at the factory.
