Thanks for this help line .
Basicly i have a JO 5 section Peerless steam Boiler w. tankless coil it used to heat very well except for this year. I have cleaned and flushed the Boiler, hartford loop is not clogged (temp changes on pipe) i have had the chimney and chamber cleaned as well as between the sections. I also used to get sufficient heating for many yrs with a 1.5 gal 80deg solid nozzel, I changed the Nozzel and even tried a 1.75 70deg solid.
I even made the pipes pitch better. And changed main risers Air valves with type D maid o mist valves it helped some, but 2 risers are not taking any heat i used an air compressor to check for blockage while i oppened up the line in the basement to relieve any excess pressure.
the other 2 risers only heat up 1/2 of there radiators this is a 3 story house plus basement. I even insulated the mains in the basement it used to work fine without it.
I don't get knocking.
The only thing i remembered last yr was a 1st flr radiator steam air valve ruptured on the side.
2 techs say it works fine but couldn't explain why it wasn't building pressure also and why it is burning 200 gal every 6 days.
I'm in the bronx so if u can help dinner is on me.

possible leak
Is the boiler working properly? Did those techs check the efficiency of the burner? If so, then there may be a broken pipe. Steam will take the the path of lease resistance. start looking for signs of water damage, inside and outside,Try shuting off the radiaters that are hot now. Do those risers still get hot?0 -
How often
is water being added?
200 gals. of oil in 6 days tells me you may have a crack above the water line in the boiler. The steam is going up the chimney.

The techs didn't check the efficency of the boiler. The risers used to be slow at heating this seazon so i changed air walves (heeee) to type D maid o mist's they now heat better but the problem is the radiators don't heat but 1/2 while boiler burning for more steam.0 -
well it doesn't fill often and the 1st tech took off the exhaust duct and cleaned it with a hose as well and said it was fine he fired it up with out the duct didn't see any steam and it doesn't fill as often last night another tech observed and said its not filling. the oly leak i found was a condensate leak not steam and it was very minimal at 1 drop per 15 secs or so i will epoxy it for now but not a steam or pressure type leak.0 -
It must
be running almost 24 hrs a day. That, or you have an oil leak. Look at your chimney outside, is there a plume of white smoke? Much more than normal? Like Mark said, you may have a leak above the water line. I saw a boiler with a hole the size of a softball in one of the sections right near the flue collector on the top of the boiler. Any one look inside?0 -

Any more info on this boiler please help0 -
Where in the Bronx?
I am nearby in New Rochelle. I could look at it for you.

1.50 g.p.h for 24/hrs ==36 gallons 36x6=216 gallons --your in the bronx and someone has stole your oil either your neighbor or your front lawn --0 -
Well, thats a possibility.
a leak in the return line on a two pipe system oil distribution would likely make one wonder where the oil was dissapearing to also...it is unlikely the boiler has the capacity to hide 30,000,000 btus...+0 -
Went to see Terry's Boiler
As expected, the Peerless JOT-5 had the usual softball-sized hole in the front/top of the rear section. Probably not noticed before the cleaning.
It is gonna be an easy replacement for Terry, as there are unions on both the suppy and return. All he has to do is get an ECT-5 and go to work.
And believe it or not, even though it was The Bronx, nobody was stealing oil. It is a 275 tank in the basement with a one pipe feed to the burner. Gotta watch those stereotypes guys. The Bronx is not as bad as they tell you on TV. I've been to worse places (Detroit, Baltimore)than the good old Bronx. Thanks to former mayor Rudy Guiliani and the NYPD, The Bronx is better than ever.
What a pleasure to meet such a nice person as Terry. We discussed Heating, Boilers, Cars, and most important Family, over a nice lunch. It is my great luck to meet him.

Al Corelli i work in westchester, the bronx, hunts point and some in queens --no stereotyping here --there are some decent areas in the bronx and there are some bad-ones i do commercial we've had burners stolen,e-110 relays and i had a cousin who was in the brownstones -his fuel bill was like Terries and it was rectified by putting a locking cap on the lines /// glad to hear it wasnt the tank leaking ---that'd be a mess0 -
We try to stay in Westchester.
Too much BS with the city of NY.
Hope to meet you one day.0 -
It was fun meeting up with Al Corelli my new Friend
I think i will be swapping the peerless for a Smith rough in looks close and the difference is with a back exhaust a little more work. I just hate peerless now after seeing what Al predicted materialize.
Al you are a Top Notch Tech and a great friend.
Hope to see you and your wife over for dinner soon.
So off to work I go ........I'll be busy for the next week or so. talk to you all soon will post some pics.0 -
