Taco zone fails to open?

Taco gold zone valve has to be powered down before you manualy purge through the valve,did you shut power off to boiler before opening valve if not it is possible to cook the thermostat.What kind of stat do you have

    In the past week I have seen two Taco Gold zone valves with what I think is the same problem. If the valve is opened manualy I can purge the zone and get hot water from the return. When I stop purging with the valve still manualy open the flow seems to stop.
    Any ideas?
