Let me try and explain this. Mind you I don't do alot of steam although I would like to do more.
I replaced a 5 section WM 68 steamer today. Unit had cracked last weekend and the customer finally decided on what they wanted to do. They ended up going with the Weil Mclain 5 section, basicly a one for one swap. I noted when pulling the return line that it was partially plugged, so I replace all of the pipe's back till it cleaned up. I then wired in the system and found the Mcdonald 101 was feeding the boiler without power. I shut the feed down and manually filled the boiler. I fired the system, set it up and watched it run. I brought the unit up to steam, and skimmed the boiler. I ran it through a couple cycles to take out what I could with the intention to skim it again Monday when I replace the 101. I then went upstair's to check the house and radiators, when I returned I found the LWCO had shut the boiler down?? At this point it had run for 1/2 an hour straight with no problems. Why would it in 5 minutes suddenly loose water? I added enough to bring the system back online and went looking for leaks. Finding none I went back to the boiler which was still running fine.. I watched it for an hour and it never lost water again. Am I missing something? I called the customer after getting home and he's happy as a lark. Said his house is already up to temp and it's great....
